Joyful Journeys

Today is my birthday! 32 laps around the sun, I’m starting to feel like I may be getting the hang of this whole living thing. It’s really quite a joyful journey, being alive. This morning, I woke up in a little yurt down near Crestone, Colorado, at Joyful Journeys hot springs. I’m on an adventure with two dear friends, Max and Aman, and today we’ll continue over to Aztec, New Mexico, where we’ll attend Unison Festival. We’ll be enjoying the weekend getting to play and enjoy life with many of our friends from Boulder and beyond, and many new friends we have yet to meet.

Play has been such an important contemplation in my life lately, and how important it is, for so many areas in our lives. People who play tend to live healthier and longer lives. I actually met a lovely couple this morning in the hot springs, John and Mary. John sat in the cold plunge for about 8 minutes and then talked with me about his Wim Hof practice and his goal of hiking all the 14ers in Colorado (he’s at 37 out of 54). I could see in him (and Mary too!) a playful spirit, a young heart and plenty of vitality despite the grey hairs (John is 72).

Play is not just important for individual health though, it’s also incredibly important for flexibility and creativity in many dimensions, particularly in the social spheres. I love the book “Dawn of Everything” by David Graeber and David Wengrow. One of the core points this book makes is that part of what makes us human is our pattern to socially experiment, to try and fail, and to continually learn how we can effectively organize ourselves in groups. I think of this often with woven web, and how important it is for us to experiment and play, as an organization and within our communities, to stay open and curious so we can learn how to better relate with each other.

As you move into this weekend, I encourage you to play with this idea of play. How does play show up in your life? When you bump into edges in your relationships, can you bring a playful curiosity as you explore those edges? Are there ways you might lean into enjoying this moment, whatever it holds? And is there anyone you’re interested in playing more with today?

Play really does have this sweet way of inviting us to more fully enjoy this journey we’re all on.

I hope to play with many of you soon. Perhaps even at Unison if you’re heading that way :)

Joyful journeys my friends,

-aar
