Weaving Boulder’s Becoming
What is Boulder to you? What do you see as Boulder’s potential, what is Boulder becoming or what can it become?
These days, it seems a common point of conversation among many is exploring what we love about Boulder, what has brought us here? There are many, like myself, who have spent a good bit of time traveling, experiencing places all over the world, only to find ourselves feeling deeply called to root into this place of Boulder and to be a part of what’s happening here. So what is happening here?
Personally, I think Boulder is a rather unique blend of technology, entrepreneurship & scientific research alongside deep community connection, contemplation & spirituality. We have two very different universities rooted here in Boulder with CU and with Naropa, and each of them represents different potentials. I see huge potential in Boulder to lead the way in technological innovation, in regenerative agriculture & ecological restoration, in psychedelics, consciousness & mental health, in civics & government, in community & dialogue, and in so much more.
When I look at this ever-growing list of potential, pointing to what Boulder might be becoming, something I think that can often be missed is the importance of weaving these different visions together, fostering more collaboration between different fields and supporting a vision for Boulder and beyond that is truly inclusive. To weave boulder’s becoming, we have to bring together the visionaries working to nurture these potentials in Boulder, recognize the visionary potential in all of us, and help to foster the kind of collaboration and communication that moves us towards seeing together and harmonizing our movements together around a mutual vision for a more beautiful world.
Supporting this kind of organization remains one of the more interesting problems to solve in this world. Due to how emergent many of these visions and solutions are, structures for catalyzing organization also need to more naturally emergent, as overly rigid structures tend to stifle creativity more than foster it. I’m reminded of MLK Jr;s quote, “Those who love peace must learn to organize as effectively as those who love war”. I think the challenge we face is that much of the way we’ve been taught to organize in this world is inherently violent, excessively forcing a certain agenda on top of people’s emergent processes. And yet it is vital that we organize and that inevitably requires structures.
We’ve been dreaming and scheming around how to effectively address this issue, in Boulder and beyond; how to catalyze greater connection within the web here that can support us effectively weaving boulder’s becoming. You’ll definitely hear more from us over the coming months about what’s emerging for us there, but for now, we’d love to hear your thoughts! What emerges from you around this question of Boulder’s becoming, and what do you think supports us coming together more effectively as we move to bring about a better world for all?
